R11.5 Added to farm

Posted September 9, 2009

This month added R11.5 to the farm and also decided the tier options were getting too complicated - so simplified back to the original tiers of just 48CPU and 120CPU. To accommodate user plug-in needs for R11 there will be a 32 bit and a 64 bit option (in 120CPU) while R11.5 will be 64 bit only for both 48CPU and 120CPU (since the plugin arcitecture change makes many legacy plugins obsolete). I also decided to take my own concerns about the economy and everything getting too expensive and drop back the pricing rates, as well as with R11.5 the new bucket render engine and instances engine will help immensely on architecture renders so no need for the additonal time and costs associated with that previously more expensive tier - so it has been removed as unnecessary now.

I hope all the RK users are weathering this difficult economy well, and as always please feel free to email me if you need anything.

Finally the move to 64bit...

Posted May 23, 2009

A bunch of new announcements finally, the big move to 64 bit OS has been completed, along with the upgrade to 8GB ram per render client - this has a perk to running on a quad core system as it allows double the ram per core which as we all know the more ram the faster your render can run if it needs it.

One other reason I currently prefer quad core computers at this point in technology evolution is that many processes are still not multi-threaded so often you may find yourself calculating a process on one single core, while 7 other sit idle - that definitely is not great when you are paying on a time based farm and 87.5% of the time calculation is going towards idle processors. When cpu scaling improves and you are not losing 25% inefficiency then the move to 8 core or above will be beneficial - think 25% of your bill was paid toward zero processing gain - sounds like a pretty good deal for the person you are paying those ghz hours towards...
